Veneer joint  The joint is tight and the
venner held down nicely to the deck.
SUCCESS!.
Vacuum bagging  Once the decks
were cut and fit between the tapered
inwales we put on bookmatched
walnut veneer.
Food Saver  The FoodSaver vacuum
bagger worked well.  The two veneers
were taped and then glued with epoxy.
Problem solving  The sheerline curved
too much to bend easily.  Guang did
not want to use screws...so he
pondered...until he solved the problem.
Stern deck  Epoxied into place and held with
screws, the deck looks nice.  Screws were later
removed.  The inwales are about 1/8" above the
sheer.  We inlayed a walnut strip between the
inwale and outwale to hide the hull edge.
Tapered outwales  We clamped the
tapered  outwales in place and cut to
length.
Outwaled glued   57 clamps hold the
outwale in place.
Unique clamp  Two blocks were cut to
fit the stems and held in place with a
steel cable.....
.......running the length of the canoe.
Lifting in the middle kept the blocks in
place when we moved the outwales to
position.
March 2007
Trim
Bow seat  A nicely caned seat,
mounted 9.5" above canoe bottom
tilted 1/2" toward the front.
Rounding outwales  The tapered
outwales needed the finishing touch of
a belt sander....carefully used.
Bow deck and gunwales  The tapered
gunwales, rounded end, and walnut
inlay really show off the bookmatched
deck.
Nice lines  Now for some sanding and
shaping.
Stem area  We achieved success in
the stem/deck/outwale union
Outwales   Ahhh...in place at last.
Different stems  The Ranger in the
background has a very different stem
line than the Redbird.
Stern seat  Again mounted at the
same height as the bow and tilted.
Construction complete  Just more
sanding and then we apply the finish.
Our May 23 Mudro Lake entrance date
keeps us busy....we will complete her
in time!
Building the Prospector Ranger
Inwale   was 3/4" X 3/4" ash tapered to
3/8" the last 30" at stern and bow.
Steaming was not necessary to make
the upswept ends.  That is a Bear
Mountain Redbird above the Ranger.
Inwale stem joint  was a complex
angle and after a few tries we cut it
right.
Gunwales finally finished
Seat caning  Guang shows how it is
done!
The real caner...  Guang soon tired of
caning and somehow convinced his
fiancee Adrienne to finish the job.
Curly maple yoke  Guang did a nice
job carving the yoke.
