Making a Laminated Bent-Shaft Paddle
|
Rounding the Shaft
The eight sides were then removed to
create a sixteen-sided shaft. Sanding
the 16-sides shaft removed the
edges. The shaft was oval at the
throat (1 1/4" X 1 1/16") and tapered to
a round 1 1/16" shaft at the grip.

and ash laminates.
After marking an octagonal
patter on the shaft, I removed
the four edges with a
spokeshave to make the
shaft octagonal. I discovered
that working with a shaving
horse provided a good way to
hold the paddle while
shaping the shaft and also
the blade and grip.
